The world's largest airliner, an Air France A380, touched down in New York on Friday after completing the first Atlantic crossing from Europe to the United States.

The Airbus superjumbo carried 538 passengers, who had bought their tickets at auction, and landed at J.F. Kennedy Airport, several minutes ahead of schedule.

Air France is the first European airline to put the giant aircraft into service, but the fourth worldwide after Singapore Airlines, Gulf-based Emirates and Qantas of Australia.

On board, passengers were treated to free champagne and a three-member jazz band.

While most passengers were happy with the flight, journalists travelling onboard described the conditions as rather cramped, saying Air France had chosen a dense seating configuration.
