The Steelers began their preparation for Sunday's AFC North matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals, and it was no surprise they did so with some players sidelined in practice.
The team went into last week's game against the Las Vegas Raiders will several defensive starters out with injuries, while there were others that suffered in-game injuries that Coach Mike Tomlin indicated during his weekly press conference would affect them from a preparation standpoint.
"There were some injuries in-game that affected us in-game and affect us from a preparation standpoint," said Tomlin. "We've got a lot of irons in the fire, if you will, from a health standpoint. Thankfully, in today's NFL with the flexibility of practice squads and so forth, we have all the answers in-house. I'm not necessarily worried about the injury in terms of our expectations, in terms of our performance. We have a week to prepare with known issues. In-game injuries cause more problems than known issues like you're faced with here at the top of the week, so we'll build a plan to highlight the men that we know will be available to us. We'll leave the light on for some that are in question, and we'll go in that stadium and be prepared to play."
There was some good news, though, as linebacker Devin Bush was a full participant in practice after suffering a groin injury in practice last week that forced him to miss the Raiders game.
Among those not practicing on Wednesday were quarterback Ben Roethlisberger who suffered a pectoral injury against the Raiders, linebacker Alex Highsmith, who suffered groin injury against the Raiders, receiver Diontae Johnson, who suffered a knee injury on the final play of the Raiders game. In addition, defensive lineman Carlos Davis is still sidelined with a knee injury, and tight end Eric Ebron didn't practice, just a coach's decision.
Cornerback Joe Haden, who missed the Raiders game with a groin injury suffered in practice last week, was limited on Wednesday. Also limited was linebacker T.J. Watt, who suffered a groin injury against the Raiders, and cornerback Justin Layne, with an Achilles.
