EAGAN, Minn. - The Minnesota Vikings were assigned the 24th pick of the 2023 NFL Draft, a spot determined by the team's record and the completion of the Wild Card Round of the NFC and AFC Playoffs.

This year, the 24th pick of the first round will actually be the 23rd overall selection because Miami had to forfeit its 2023 first-round and 2024 third-round picks. The loss of those picks followed an investigation that concluded the Dolphins had "impermissible communications" with Tom Brady in 2019-20 while he was under contract with the Patriots and after the 2021 season while he was a member of the Buccaneers.

The 2023 NFL Draft will be hosted by Kansas City, Missouri, on April 27-29.

On March 9, Minnesota was awarded one compensatory pick in the sixth round and learned the selection numbers for picks in the fourth and fifth rounds.

The Vikings have picks in the following rounds:

First Round, 23rd overall selection

Third Round, 87th overall selection

Fourth Round, 119th overall selection

Fifth Round, 158th overall selection

Sixth Round, 211th overall selection (compensatory)

Teams normally are slated to have at least one selection in each of the seven rounds, but Minnesota has executed multiple trades, including one to acquire T.J. Hockenson in early November, that have reduced the number of selections to four.

Where did the other selections go?

Second Round: Minnesota sent this pick and a 2024 third-round selection to Detroit in exchange for Hockenson, a 2023 fourth-round selection and a 2024 pick that will be a fourth- or fifth-rounder, depending on conditions.

So they picked up a fourth-round pick, shouldn't that give Minnesota two selections in that round?

It would, but Minnesota used that selection, as well as a 2022 fifth-rounder, to trade up and draft cornerback Akayleb Evans in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft.

Sixth Round: Minnesota sent this pick to Houston to acquire defensive lineman Ross Blacklock.

Seventh Round: Minnesota dealt this selection to Denver when trading to reacquire Stephen Weatherly in October 2021. The pick was involved in subsequent deals on its way to Pittsburgh.

Vikings History at 23 & 24

The Vikings most recently made the 23rd overall selection in the 2021 NFL Draft, picking left tackle Christian Darrisaw after trading down in the first round.

Minnesota also struck gold with Justin Jefferson at the nearby 22nd overall spot in 2020.

The Vikings have drafted from the 23rd spot four times in franchise history, tabbing receiver Lance Rentzel (1965), defensive tackle Sharrif Floyd (2013), receiver Laquon Treadwell (2016) and Darrisaw.

Minnesota drafted from the 24th pick twice, selecting running back Leo Hayden in 1971 and right tackle Korey Stringer in 1995.
